5 Signs You Can Benefit from Postmenopausal Care

Menopause marks the end of menstruation and usually takes about a year to be diagnosed. During that time (usually somewhere between ages 45-55) and after, your body will go through a lot of changes called perimenopause -- changes including lower estrogen, mood changes, hot flashes, slower metabolism, and sleep problems. Once you’re in postmenopause, you will need to know what to expect and how to handle the changes you’ve gone through.

1. Experiencing a loss in energy

Menopause fatigue is something that can start during perimenopause, when the body is still going through the initial changes. But it happens in postmenopause as well, and at worst can be constant and severe. Common things to expect with menopause fatigue include lowered attention span, fuzziness, irritability, and memory lapses.

2. Feeling a lack of interest in sex

Lower estrogen can also mean a lack of interest in sex. It can also cause vaginal atrophy (a thinning of the vaginal lining, which causes dryness), which creates discomfort and possible postmenopausal bleeding. All of these things can also result in lower stimulation and arousal, and this, in turn, also drives down libido.

3. Gaining weight

Lower estrogen also leads to a slower metabolism, which can directly affect weight gain. The hormone changes may also cause your body to use starches and blood sugar less efficiently, and this can cause you to store more fat. Other factors such as age and how physically active you are will also play a role, but the new hormonal balance will affect a lot of the body’s activity, including weight.

4. Sudden mood swings

Another change that often starts in perimenopause, postmenopause can also bring mood changes such as irritability, depression, weepiness, and anxiety. Depression (affecting one out of five women) and irritability (up to 70% of women in the early stages) are especially common. In fact, in studies up to 23% of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women saw increased mood swings. 

5. Bones fracture or break more easily

Women are more likely to get osteoporosis than men in general; but after menopause, you lose density in your bones quicker, and the risk of bone fractures and breaks increases significantly. Prolonged periods of low estrogen can cause loss of bone mass, so the risk increases with age as women over 50 are already more likely to get osteoporosis.
